Skye book reaches parts no other books reach

november 25, 2011 04:23pm

A friend of a friend and her partner went to the Isle of Skye recently, carrying a copy of my Isle of Skye book. Every morning they went out 'with Terry', to guide them safely across the island. So enthralled were they with the pastures across which my Skye book led them, that they became engaged, clutching my 280 pages, and were married on the 26th November. I never had this in mind when I wrote the book!

My guidebook for walkers to the Isle of Mull is now available, and can be bought direct from the publisher (Cicerone Press - www.cicerone.co.uk) and from Amazon. Also now available is my book on 'Geocaching in the UK', the first of its kind exclusive to the UK.

Still 'appy in my work

I'm currently working on a digital guide to the Lake District for use on an iPhone, which should be available in April.

I have now completed High Fells of Lakeland for Crimson Publishing, and I'm expecting my Cicerone book, Geocaching in the UK to appear anytime now.

On-going work includes a revision of my Pathfinder Guide to the Yorkshire Dales, and the early stages of Great Mountain Days in the Pennines. But mainly I'm back in research mode as I continue working for a PhD at Lancaster Univeresity.

Earlier this year I completed the script for a DVD produced by Chromavision and presented by my colleague, Mark Richards, taking walkers along the beautiful Dales Way. The DVD is available now, and can be ordered at http://www.yorkshire-dvd.co.uk/dalesway.html.

Moving on

I am just coming to the end of a few days in the Pyrenees - where I can recommend the Hotel les Cimes in Argeles-Gazost. We've had some interesting outings, walking up through Gavarnie to the highest waterfall in Europe, and today, driving across the Tour de France route over the Col d'Aubisque. There was no high-speed stuff today: a long line of cows walking slowly up the road, leaving messages as they walked, created quite a tailback (not sure if the pun was intended - it just came out!). A couple of days ago we were at the Col de Tourmalet, where no fewer than 41 griffon vultures were taking a keen interest in an upside-down sheep, not yet dead. Yesterday, we found a decidedly dead cow with 14 griffs in attendance.

La vie francaise

It's time to go to France again, but at least this time I'm starting with a holiday, in the Pyrenees, before getting back to work starting with a visit to that loveliest of French cities, Toulouse. After that I'm bound for Hérault and Montpellier before tripping up to the Vaucluse...not been there for a while.

Once all this is done and dusted, I'll be back in research mode as I return to studying the development of tourist accommodation in the Lake District...all through the winter, apart from a brief spell on the West Highland Way, trying to complete what I didn't finish in July.

But currently, I'm working on a guidebook to the High Fells of the Lake District for Crimson Publishing.

Moving on

june 30, 2010 07:53am

After three weeks in France, visiting Morbihan, Finistere and Charente, I'm now heading back to Scotland to walk the West Highland Way to prepare a revision of my Cicerone guidebook. Then it's time to work on a new guide for Crimson to the high fells of the Lake District. September will see me back in France, heading for the Pyrenees, to see if I can still get my aching bones above 10,000 feet, then a few days in Toulouse before heading for the Med, and later the Vaucluse. That should get me through to October.

Bound for France

june 03, 2010 04:59pm

I'm spending time at the moment revising the Michelin Green Guide to the Auvergne; such a lovely part of France...wish I could be there all the time.

June usually sees me somewhere in France; this year I'm spending time in Brittany before heading for cognac country in Charente Maritime. You'll probably find me clutching a bottle or two in the vicinity of Chateau de Beaulon.

Back home at the beginning of July, when I wander off up the West Highland Way to do revision work on my guidebook.

Skye days

may 17, 2010 09:31am

I'm on Skye, so it must be May! A week on Mull led to a stay on Skye for the rest of May, while working on a new Pathfinder Guide to the island for Crimson Publishing.
